Scriptural Belief in JESUS =
Eternal Life

GOD'S plan for salvation is so simple it's often difficult for a lost people to believe what they are being told. With something so important, they expect it to be more involved; that something more is required of them. Likewise, many soul winners fail to accept the plan's simplicity and frequently make it more complex than it should be (see Soul Winning: Another Look). This paper directs someone to salvation by establishing a scriptural, heartfelt belief in JESUS the Son of GOD, our savior, the crucified, the resurrected, the glorified, and our redeemer. We do this according to scripture; nothing more is added.

The following can be used as an outline for sharing the Gospel with someone. It is desirable to have a Bible with the appropriate verses tabbed so you can find them quickly, but if this is not possible, a print out of this web page will work since the verses shown are exact copies from the KJV Bible.

The Bible gives us at least three excellent examples of an individual being led to salvation. They are to be found in:
  • John chapter 3 - JESUS dealing with Nicodemus told him in verse 16, that eternal life is based on belief.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
  • Acts 8: 26-37 - Philip told the Ethiopian eunuch that salvation was based on a heart felt belief.
"And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
  • Acts 16: 25-31 - Paul & Silas told the Philippian jailer that believing was the requirement
". . . Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."

  • In each case, the only activity called for was to believe in (on) JESUS/SON of GOD. Baptism* of the eunuch and the jailer did follow, but it was after a saving belief was expressed.
(Note - in an actual witnessing session, if you have a Bible you may want to read more from each example. If using this outline, explain what is taking place and read only the concluding verse.)

If then belief is the key to our hereafter in heaven, the obvious question becomes,

"What are we to believe about JESUS?"

There are hundreds of passages in the Bible that describe JESUS and HIS activities, but for our purpose here we will consider only 6 of them.

First of all, Who is JESUS? The answer is found in the 3rd chapter of Matthew. Prior to starting HIS ministry on earth, JESUS wanted to be baptized. This was concluded in verses 16 & 17 of Matthew 3.

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Before JESUS came to earth, we're told that HE was in heaven with GOD. This brings us to the second fact that we believe: why HE came to earth. This is found in John 3: 17.

"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved"

    and Luke 19:10

"For the Son of man (JESUS) is come to seek and to save that which was lost."

After three and a half years of HIS teaching and healing ministry, JESUS was arrested by the religious leaders of Jerusalem. Through false accusations, the governor was persuaded to execute HIM. HE died by crucifixion that we find in John 19: 16-18

".....And they took Jesus, and led him away. 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18 Where they crucified him,......"

This is fact number three of what we need to believe - How HE died.

When HE died HE was buried in a cave-like tomb and after 3 days, some women believers came to anoint HIM with burial ointment. Instead of finding JESUS, there was an angel inside the tomb.

"And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him"

    Mark 16: 6

It is extremely important to know and believe that CHRIST was raised from the grave; we do not rely on a dead savior!

Following HIS resurrection, JESUS spent 40 days with HIS followers, then went back into heaven. As HE ascended an angel spoke to HIS disciples.

".....Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go . . . ."

    Acts 1: 11

Having gone back to heaven, HE is waiting for the time that HE is to return for us.

The final point we are to believe about JESUS; HIS promise that HE is coming back for those of us who have trusted in HIM for salvation. For that we look to John 14: 2 & 3 where JESUS is speaking,

".... I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

    and in 1 Thess. 4: 16 & 17, the apostle Paul wrote:

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the LORD"

If you believe what we have seen in the scriptures, that JESUS (the SON of GOD) came to earth, was crucified, resurrected, returned to heaven and will someday come back for us who believe in HIM and you understand that eternal life is not attained by good behavior, charitable deeds, or church membership,

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast."

    Eph. 2: 8 - 9

then you need to confess (acknowledge) your belief to GOD in prayer, and claim the promise HE made to us.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation"
    Rom. 10: 9 -10

You can pray to GOD right now, wherever you are. You do not have to be in church nor in the presence of a preacher or priest. The prayer does not have to be long or elaborate. Simply tell GOD that you know what HE has provided for you through HIS SON, JESUS and that you want the eternal life that HE has promised in HIS WORD.

It is important to realize that the salvation that you obtain can never be lost nor taken from you.

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

    Rom. 8: 38 - 39

    * There are those who teach that our eternal life in heaven is partly dependent on baptism. If this were true it would mean that a man is somewhat responsible for your salvation. What man (or woman) is qualified to be equal with CHRIST in the work that HE completed? This is not scriptural since the apostle Peter speaking about JESUS in Acts 4: 12, said,

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
